Full-day and summer babysitting rates
Per day, per week, after school, and the two rules that kick in as hours add up.
Short answer
An 8-hour day with one child runs about $158.48 to $209.92 at 2026 national rates. For summer weeks, watch two thresholds: overtime after 40 hours for a regular sitter, and $3,000 in a year for household-employer taxes.
A day of babysitting at 2026 rates
| Day | At $19.81/hr | At $23/hr | At $26.24/hr |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 hours | $118.86 | $138.00 | $157.44 |
| 8 hours | $158.48 | $184.00 | $209.92 |
| 10 hours | $198.10 | $230.00 | $262.40 |
Summer weeks
A summer sitter working a regular schedule of long weeks usually isn’t a casual babysitter under federal law, so overtime at 1.5× applies after 40 hours in a week unless they live with you. The table uses $20 an hour; try your own numbers in the nanny pay calculator, which handles weekly overtime.
Taxes: at these hours, a household employee passes the $3,000 threshold in a few weeks. Sitters under 18 who are students are excluded from Social Security and Medicare. See babysitter taxes.
| Hours | Weekly gross | Passes $3,000 in |
|---|---|---|
| 30 | $600.00 | Week 5 |
| 40 | $800.00 | Week 4 |
| 45 (5 overtime) | $950.00 | Week 4 |
After-school sitters
Care.com’s 2026 Cost of Care Report puts after-school sitters at an average posted rate of $21.87/hr, or $328 a week for about 15 hours with one child. Short school pickups are where a minimum and gas money matter most.

Questions people ask
How much should I pay a babysitter for a full day?
At 2026 national hourly rates, 8 hours with one child is $158.48 to $209.92. UrbanSitter's own guidance puts an 8-hour day at "around $145 to $240", while its flat-rate table lists $115 for a day, so agree on hourly or flat up front.
How much should I pay a babysitter per week in the summer?
Hours × rate, plus overtime if a regular sitter works more than 40 hours. At $20 an hour: 30 hours is $600.00, 40 hours is $800.00, and 45 hours with overtime is $950.00.
Do I owe taxes on a summer babysitter?
If the sitter is your household employee and you pay them $3,000 or more in cash wages in 2026, Social Security and Medicare apply. A full-time summer sitter can cross that within a month. Wages to a sitter under 18 who is a student don't count.
