Pay rules in Oregon

Minimum wage. Oregon's minimum wage is $15.55 an hour, in effect since July 1, 2026. Standard rate. Portland metro: $16.80. Nonurban counties: $14.55 (July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027).

Casual babysitting (irregular or occasional, usually 20 hours a week or less, and not the sitter’s vocation) is exempt from the federal minimum wage and overtime. Nannies and regular sitters are covered: at least $15.55/hr for every hour under Oregon law where it applies, and never less than the federal $7.25, plus overtime at 1.5× after 40 hours in a week unless they live in your home.

Oregon Domestic Workers' Protection Act

  • Overtime after 40 hours a week, or after 44 hours for a worker who lives in the home.
  • Oregon's minimum wage law exempts babysitting, but babysitters who are not working on a casual basis are owed at least the federal minimum wage and overtime.
